Rory Ward
PhD Researcher
Rory Ward is a first-year PhD student in the Unit for Social Semantics at the Data Science Institute, National University of Ireland, Galway, where he is supervised by Prof. John Breslin. His research is in the field of Automatic Visual Media Colourisation which is a subfield of Artificial Intelligence. This area is concerned with tools and techniques to colourise black and white images and videos from some underlying representation of information. Rory holds a B.Eng. in Electronic and Computer Engineering from National University of Ireland, Galway, where his thesis was focused on Local-Specifically Trained Deep Learning Colourisation. Prior to joining the CRT-AI funded PhD programme, Rory developed a background in Electrical Power Transmission. In his spare time Rory enjoys practicing judo and playing guitar.

Teerath Kumar
PhD Researcher
Teerath Kumar, is a full time PhD Student, at Dublin City University, Glasnevin, Ireland. Previously I was full time research Assistant at Kyung Hee University, South Korea for 2 years, and published journals and conference papers in the field of computer vision and machine learning. I also worked as a Data Scientist at Human Focus Technologies, UK based company, Islamabad, Pakistan for 8 months. Before that, I was also part time internee during my undergrad study at Automotive Artificial Intelligence Germany based in Islamabad. I have been working on deep learning for computer vision for the last 4 years. My research interests (are not limited to): image classification, detection and segmentation. Additionally, I worked with medical imaging as well in last 6 months.

Aaron Flannagan
PhD Researcher
Aaron Flannagan is a first-year PhD student in the school of computer science at the National University of Galway (NUIG), where he is supervised by Dr. Frank Glavin. His research is in the field of Data Synthesis and Deep Learning which is a subfield of Artificial Intelligence machine learning that is concerned with the tools and techniques of data augmentation, automatic learning, and predictive modelling. Aaron holds an MSc. in Artificial Intelligence from NUIG where his thesis was focused on the semantic segmentation of the skin layer boundaries in nano and standard Optical Coherence Tomography finger tissue scans prior to joining the CRT-AI funded PhD programme, Aaron worked as a software developer and devops engineer in SAP, while obtaining his MSc part-time over two years. The core projects he focused on were concerned with the tracking and tracing of pharmaceuticals, systems integration for a drug ordering management portal, and full-scale network and API development for financial institutions.

Lavanya Pampana
PhD Researcher
Lavanya Pampana is a first-year PhD student in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, UCC, Cork, Ireland and she is supervised by Dr Emanuel Popovici and is co-supervised by Andriy Temko. Her research is in the field of EEG signal analysis where she will be applying ML techniques. She holds an MSc in Software Engineering from BTH, Karlskrona, Sweden. Prior to joining the CRT-AI funded Ph.D. programme, Lavanya worked in Volvo Cars, Gothenburg as a Function Visualization Developer in their R&D team. In her spare time, she reads books, learns music, loves to hike, practices dance and watches documentaries. She has also volunteered for several educational outreach programs in her spare time over the last year.

Jovan Jeromela
PhD Researcher
Jovan Jeromela joins a first year PhD student at ADAPT Centre at TCD working under the supervision of Owen Conlan. Jovan has two undergraduate degrees: BSc-Hon. in Software & Information Engineering from TU Wien and BSc in Computer Science from the University of Novi Sad. He is soon to graduate as a MSc in Data Science from TU Wien. Jovan’s primary area of research is to be user modelling and personalisation. He has keen interest in recommender systems and machine learning in general. His research thus far included engagement prediction, analysing and predicting student performance, and argumentation frameworks. Jovan listens to countless podcasts and his favourite book series is Foundation by Isaac Asimov.

Dhuha Al-zobaie

Dhuha is a first-year PhD student in the school of computer science and statistics, Trinity College Dublin, where she is supervised by Dr. Siobhan Clarke. She holds a MSc. in Computer science, Iraq where her thesis was focused on design, programming and applies autonomous robots in real time. Prior to joining the CRT-AI funded PhD programme, she worked as an Academic Lecturer at several universities in Baghdad. In her spare time she enjoys hanging out with friends, cooking and watching movies.

Amandeep Singh
PhD Researcher
Amandeep ”Aman” Singh is a first-year PhD student in Lero at the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems, University of Limerick, where he is supervised by Prof. Dr. Tiziana Margaria. His research is in the field of “digital thread platforms” which is a sub-field of Artificial Intelligence and Business Analytics that is concerned with developing tools and techniques to produce a platform that can support dynamic use of AL/ML pipelines depending on the use-case of the industry stakeholders. He holds two Masters, first one in Theoretical Astrophysics and Cosmology from the University of Zurich, Switzerland, where the focus of his thesis was to develop a sub-grid model to analyse the abundances of H2 & CO molecules in giant molecular clouds in a cosmological galaxy formation simulation and then comparing the obtained results with observations from similar galaxies. His second Masters is in Data Analytics from National College of Ireland, Dublin, where the focus of his thesis was developing a deep learning pipeline for detecting and recognising faces behind face masks. Prior to joining the CRT-AI funded PhD programme, Amandeep worked as an Associate Faculty at National College of Ireland, Dublin, wherein he taught different modules from the field of Computer Science to Higher Diploma and Bachelors students. In his spare time, Amandeep enjoys playing the Indian classical instrument Tabla, reading books and cycling.

Bunyarit Puangthamawathanakun

Bunyarit is a first-year PhD student at the School of Computing, Dublin City University, where he is supervised by Dr. Graham Healy and Dr. Cathal Gurrin. His research is in the field of face de-identification which is a subfield in Artificial Intelligence Computer Vision that is concerned with tools and techniques to synthesise faces while protecting privacy and preserving semantic for faces in lifelogging data. Bunyarit holds an BSc. in Computer Science from King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi in Thailand prior to joining the CRT-AI funded PhD programme. In his spare time Bunyarit enjoys social activities, cooking and playing music instruments such guitar and piano.

Fitria Wulandari Ramlan

Fitria Wulandari
Fitria is a member of the 3rd cohort of CRT-AI, studying at the School of Computer Science, University of Galway, under the supervision of Dr. James McDermott. Her research is in the field of Evolutionary Computation, which is a subfield of AI. She is working on the interpretability of regression modelling for interpolation and extrapolation using genetic programming (GP) and multi-objective optimization.
She gained an interest in this field while she was doing her master’s at Kyungpook National University in the research lab of Evolutionary Computation and Intelligent Systems Lab, South Korea, and her thesis was focused on the Evolutionary Multi/Many-objective Approaches to solving the Next Release Optimization Problems.

Colm Brandon

Colm Brandon is a first-year PhD student in the University of Limerick, where he is supervised by Prof. Tiziana Margaria and Dr. Kerry Hagan. His research is in the field of Recommendation Algorithms which is a subfield of Artificial Intelligence that is concerned with tools and techniques to deliver tailored content and information to users. Colm holds an MSc. In Artificial Intelligence from the National University of Ireland, Galway where his thesis was focused on using network analysis in conjunction with machine learning to classify misinformation on Twitter. Away from academia Colm also is co-owner of a music events company and in the spare time enjoys playing rugby and listening to his record collection.

Kislay Raj

Kislay Raj is a first-year Ph.D. student at the school of computing, Dublin city university(DCU), where he is supervised by Dr. Alessandra Mileo.
His research is in the field of NeuroSymbolic Artificial Intelligence, which is concerned with Bridging the gap between Deep Learning and Reasoning for Explainable and Trustworthy Decision Support that is a concerning possibility of creating a common representation space where high dimensional probability distribution and causal/temporal reasoning over data streams can be combined to enable explainable and trustworthy decision support that exhibit continuous neural learning as well as cognitive stream reasoning capabilities. He holds a First class MSc. in Data Analytics, Ireland, where his thesis was focused on Fake News detection using machine learning algorithms; Prior to joining the CRT-AI-funded Ph.D. program, He worked in several positions which include, software engineering intern, Junior soft commodity analyst, online marketing manager, and data analytics consulting.
In his spare time, he enjoys writing poetry, hanging out with friends, and playing guitar.

Adam Callaghan
PhD Researcher
Adam Callaghan is a first-year PhD student in the Information Technology department in the National University of Ireland Galway, where he is supervised by Dr. Patrick Mannion and Dr. Karl Mason. His research is in the field of Theoretical Evolutionary Deep Reinforcement Learning which is a subfield of Artificial Intelligence that is concerned with developing genetical algorithms in the domain of Deep Reinforcement models. He holds an honours BSc in Mathematics and Applied mathematics. His final year project was on Differential Geometry and focused on Vector Bundles, sections and Connections. He also holds a higher diploma in Data Analytics from the National University of Ireland Galway, where he undertook a research paper in Classical Machine learning and Artificial Neural Networks for use in Credit Card Fraud Detection. Prior to joining the CRT-AI funded PhD programme, He was involved in a research internship on the multidisciplinary “Safeplan” project in collaboration with the National University of Ireland Galway. The project aimed to offer a new mobile application providing help for individuals with suicidal intentions through the use of break-point analysis and machine learning techniques. In his/her spare time He enjoys hanging out with friends playing soccer and video games.
